Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based treatment that can be effectively used to treat most, if not all, mental health conditions.
CBT begins with assessment, which involves the therapist and the client together, exploring the causes and the maintaining factors of the mental health condition. Assessment usually only takes one session, but may take more depending on how complex the presenting problems are.
CBT treatment is based on skills building. Once contributing thinking patterns, behavioural causes, and maintaining factors are discovered, then the therapist and client will work together, to build on the skills the client already has. Sessions are weekly to fortnightly, and tasks for weekly practice are discussed and agreed on together.
